Neston Swimming Club is based at Neston Brio Leisure Centre and caters for swimmers of all ages and standards. We offer a friendly and supportive learning environment to help all our swimmers enjoy their time in the water and improve their technical ability, fitness and stamina.

Swimmers can choose where their swimming journey takes them – they can just attend the training sessions, or they can add on competitive swimming too. The emphasis at the club is on offering swimming to as wide an audience as possible, at the level they want. Nobody is asked to do anything they don’t want to, and our team of well qualified coaches will ensure that all swimmers gain benefit from their time in the water.

When can you swim?

As a general principle, the swimmers are divided into two sections – Juniors and Seniors / Masters. The Junior group is for swimmers up to approximately 12/13 years old; the Senior section is for those less than 18.  Masters swimming sessions are available for people 18 years and over.  We run three sessions per week at Neston Rec: –

Juniors

  • Wednesday – 7.30 to 8.30pm
  • Friday – 7.30 to 8.30pm
  • Sunday – 8 to 9am

Seniors/Masters

  • Wednesday – 8.30 to 9.30pm
  • Friday – 8.30 to 9.30pm
  • Sunday – 8 to 9am

For swimmers transitioning from the Junior to Senior group it is possible to do an extra half hour on Wednesdays to build up stamina.

How do you get started?

We offer everyone who enquires about swimming with us an opportunity to come along for a free, no obligation trial. During this session one of our experienced coaches can do a stroke assessment, and the swimmer can see if the club environment is right for them. The trial normally takes about 15 minutes.

As a guide to coming along for a trial, we ask that candidates can swim at least one full length of free (crawl), back and breaststroke and also ‘fly if possible (this can be more challenging for some swimmers, so it’s not a problem if they can’t do it – our team of coaches can bring this on pretty quickly).

Trials run at 7.30pm (Junior) / 8.30pm (Senior/Masters) twice per month, dates will be confirmed with trialists on enquiry. Subject to their competency, triallists are welcome to stay in that session until it ends at 8.30 / 9.30pm. This gives them a real flavour for the club, an opportunity to make new friends and get some first-rate coaching.

If you are interested in trialing with our club then please complete our online application form.

What happens next?

After the trial session, all successful triallists are entitled to a further 2 free sessions to see if they like what we offer. At that point we ask you to decide if your swimmer would like to join (it is 3 sessions simply due to the insurance requirements of the national Swim England policy). After joining, swimmers will be allocated to a coach and swimming lane appropriate to their ability and aspirations and encouraged to access training as they choose. Where they then take it is up to them … but they will get all the support they need!

In addition to the sessions mentioned above we do have a sharing arrangement with another Wirral based club (Birkenhead) whereby you can access some of their sessions at no extra cost. We can let you have details of times and venues if this is of interest.

How much will it cost?

Monthly subs are £40.00 per swimmer (£60 for two, £80 for three), which entitles swimmers to attend all of the sessions listed above. Fees are charged on the 1st of the month. Payments are by direct debit. Your balance can be viewed in ClubOrganiser.

All members also pay an annual membership to Swim England – the national governing body for swimming in England.  There are two levels of membership, train (£16.50 annually) and compete (£37.00 annually), most of our members have train membership but we will advise on the best level for you/your swimmer.

If you primarily swim for another club but would like to attend Neston occasionally (no more than once a week) then please talk to the committee. There is a reciprocal relationship between Birkenhead and Neston which means members of one club can attend some sessions at the other for free! And members of other clubs that lack this reciprocal relationship, can attend Neston for half the regular fees.

How often can I swim?

Clearly how many sessions you / your swimmer attends is a matter of personal choice – but the more sessions, the faster the progression will be. As mentioned above, there are the other sessions available at Birkenhead, so swimmers could access as many as five or six sessions per week – though attendance at some of these will be down to the coaching team’s discretion. As a minimum, there will always be the three sessions per week at Neston Rec to choose from.
